TRINIDAD Y TOBAGO: Port bachannal in Tobago...as Galicia heads to Spain

Trinidad Express / A possible miscommunication over the schedule of the Super Fast Galicia on its final day in Trinidad and Tobago  may have been what  led to chaos on the Scarborough Port today, with police and coast guard officers having to be called in to maintain calm.

The Express understands the authorities were called in after the foreign crew of the Galicia asked locals employed on the vessel to vacate, in preparation for the vessel leaving for Spain.

However, what was communicated to some businesses and local crew is that the vessel was to make two journeys today. The Galicia was supposed to make an a.m. journey to Tobago, load up in the afternoon and  return to Trinidad.

It was then supposed to leave for Spain from the Port of Port of Spain tonight.

The result was bachannal in Scarborough when goods and vehicles were denied boarding yesterday afternoon.

The various parties became agitated and police and coast guard were called into mediate.

Port Authority chairman, Alison Lewis, told the Express shortly afterwards that the matter had been cleared up and the boat was being loaded with goods heading to Trinidad.

“There was some confusion,” Lewis said, adding that things had been gotten “under control”.

The Galicia was pulled from service by its owners, Trasmed, through local charter Intercontinental Shipping, after failing to get the T&T Government to commit to a five-year lease.

The vessel has been operating on a month-to-month basis for the past three years and its local charter served notice to the Ministry of Works and Transport last month.

Works minister Rohan Sinanan this week gave the assurance that the sea bridge will be aptly serviced by two replacements for the Galicia, a cargo vessel for soft goods and a barge for heavy equipment, aggregate and other items. Both vessels are locally owned.

Government has since issued a legal letter to Intercontinental warning that based on its own legal advice, an agreement did in fact exist between them that would have allowed the Galicia to operate between T&T until October 2017.

The State  is asking Trasmed to honour that agreement or face legal action.
