The trinidad Guardian / There were mixed emotions when the sport of boxing concluded its programme for the year at the Cosmic Boxing Gym in Marabella on Saturday.

A scheduled card that brought out high quality boxing led to great reviews, but laughter turned into tears on learning that a 15-member Elite team en route to the Caribbean Championship in St Lucia, December 13-16 will not be making the trip again due to financial challenges faced by the Ministry of Sports and the Sports Company of T&T.

Cecil Forde, president of the T&T Boxing Association received the dreaded news recently but said although he was saddened by this new development, his fighters will continued their preparation for future tournaments.

The team included Olympian Nigel Paul who has had most of his fights outside of T&T due to insufficient boxers in his Super Heavyweight weight division and Michael Alexander, the country’s Olympic hopeful in the 60kg category. Others on the team are Jesse Beckles (64kg), Brendon Dennis (91kg), Joshua Sylvester (Youth 64kg), Nickell Joseph (Youth 69kg), Tyron Thomas (Youth 75kg), Tyrone St Clair (Youth 81 kg), Nyrell Hosein (Junior 49kg), Blessing Waldropt (Junior 57-60kg), Tianna Guy (Novice 60-64kg), Angelique Quevedo (Elite 50-54kg) and referees/judges David Brown, Michel Agard and Latoya Providence.

Meanwhile, there were gold medal performances from a number of T&T boxers on the final day at the Marabella facility. Looked on by an appreciative crowd, Dennis who has been impressive to national selectors for 2017, received gold when he prevailed over Andrew Fermin, while Shakir Flemming, the Cosmic fighter reigned supreme over Shem Gloud of Defence Force for the top award.

Also in winners row on the night, were Aaron Prince (Prince Gladiators), Aaron Hassette (Defence Force), Alexander (Defence Force), Christopher De Freitas (Defence Force), Kevin Ramdeo (Cosmic) and Tianna Guy of Fine Line Fight Club among many others.

Guy was later adjudged Best Woman Fighter and Hassette the Best Elite. The top novice award went to Kyle Mitchell (Trumpet Boxing) with Waldropt being voted the best Junior and Thomas the best Youth. The Defence Force also took the best Team award with Biomel and Cosmic following closely behind
